CAUSES CONTROVERSY 'SOFIA', THE NEW DISNEY PRINCESS

(Quien.com) The Walt Disney defended his new character, the Princess Sophia, who in his presentation was billed as a "Hispanic Princess", but whose features have caused controversy among U.S. Hispanic associations. After criticism of the character, Disney recanted and explained that he had never intended Sofia Hispanic traits. "What is important to know is that Sophie is a girl from a fairy tale living in a fairytale world. All characters come from places of fantasy that may reflect elements of different cultures and ethnicities, but are not intended specifically to represent real-world cultures, "said Nancy Kanter Tuesday, general manager of Disney Junior worldwide. "The writers have wisely chosen to write stories that will be familiar to children from different backgrounds," he added. The new character, which will be released on Disney Channel on November 18, has red hair, blue eyes and white skin, features not defined mostly Latinos. "We need more heroes right now that are identifiable," criticized Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, a nonprofit organization that promotes equality of Latinos in the entertainment industry. "We are at a time when Latinos are taking the blame for everything that is wrong with America. If you are going to promote to the public, and Latinos in particular, let us the favor and become (the character) in a real America, "he said. Kanter insisted the fairy world of Sofia is not ours, but one designed to stimulate the imagination of children. "Series debut in Sofia Sofia The First: Once upon a princess, created for children between 2 and 7 years .
